The Permit No. C-81-008 was approved on May 26, 1988. WFC has aself--bond in place
for the reclamation of the New Horizon Mine in the amount of $2,500,000. This request
pertains to a reduction in the bond liability only and there would be no release of any
money.
The monitoring wells were drilled and put in service by Peabody Energy before WFC
acquired the property from them in 1992. Thus the surface areas associated with these
wells were reclaimed more than ten years ago.
The twenty seven (27) exploration wells were drilled and reclaimed in conjunction with
the 2005 exploration drilling program. CDRMS have been provided with a well abandon
report for these wells. _
The reclamation work for the abandonment of these wells was limited to plugging of the
holes as per the permit requirements. The holes were sealed with bentonite chips from the
bottom to within ten feet of surface. The top ten feet to three feet was filled with sakcrete
and three feet to surface was filled with topsoil and seeded.
The number of acres reclaimed during the well abandonment is very insignificant. Each
well takes a reclaimed azea of less than 0.5 sq ft. In acres, they can be perceived as
negligible.
If CDRMS approves the release of reclamation bond for these wells, the estimated costs
of reclaiming these wells will be excluded from the reclamation bond requested for the
New Horizon Mine.
Written comments or objections to the application and requests for a public hearing or
informal conference may be submitted to the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining
and Safety, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver, CO 80203 (303-866-3567). Written
comments, objections and requests must be filed with CDRMS within thirty (30) days of
the date of the last publication.
