~.
Otherwise the site is mostly pastureland with grass and annual weeds in a condition
similaz to when it was acquired. During the June 19, 2006 inspection DRMS noted
Diffuse Knapweed (Centaurea diffusa) and Scotch Thistle (Onopordum tauricum) as
being prevalent azound the North, South, and East perimeter of the site. The Division
noted the problem (Rule 3.1.10(6)) and directed submittal and implementation of a Weed
Control Technical Revision (TR).
During a subsequent site inspection by the Douglas County Weed Inspector (DCWI),
Jonathan Rife, at the Stevens Mine on August 29, 2006, noted Canada Thistle (Cirsium
arvense), which is an additional noxious weed other than the weeds noted above was at
scattered locations on the Stevens Mine site.
This Weed Control Plan has been developed to attempt to address all the noxious weed
control issues noted by DRMS and DCWI to date.
METHODOLOGY
Areas infested with the identified noxious weeds within the permit boundary will be
addressed by initial assessment and spraying by a contractor with appropriate experience
in these matters. The qualified wntractor will deem the liquid application(s) appropriate
and Acme Brick Company proposes to inform DRMS of weed wntrol activities on an
annual basis as part of the permit Annual Report function and requirements.
Acme Brick Company envisions this is an annual ongoing process during each spring to
control noxious weeds before they propagate during the summer season. Specific
management techniques will be developed, implemented and documented using a
practical mix of cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical controls as deemed both
effective and cost-effective.
In general, the thistles and Diffuse Knapweed will probably be controlled using
herbicides, particularly during the leaf development stage, but before the flowering stage
in early June. Thistles and Diffuse Knapweed will be treated in accordance with the
DCWI guidance, attached.
Further we plan to implement the plan as an integrated approach incorporation additional
weed control measures such as mowing, spot seeding, field harrowing, grazing, etc.,
which will be evaluated and implemented in conjunction with spraying as deemed
appropriate in consultation with our weed control subcontractor. If standazd measures are
not successful in eliminating the weed control problem within a reasonable amount of
tune (approximately one to four seasons of treatment) Acme Brick Company may contact
DRMS for additional assistance.
