I have owned a home with my husband and two sons on Garvin Mesa in Paonia for 14 years and
intend to live here for many years to come. We bold shares in the Terror Creek and Reservoir
- - -Gompeny-to irrigate our 9-acres aud-large-garden,-which-aupples much-ofouFfood..-I-have many-
concerns with the plans for greatly increased production proposed in the Bowie Resouroes Ltd. permit
application, specifically th the technical revsions submitted by Bowie Resources Ltd. to your offices.
* I understand that Bowie Resources Ltd. is proposing an open stockpile with the capacity for 350,000
tons of coal in this area and the construction of a coal conveyor from the portal , 3,300 feet to the coal
storage area, north and adjacent to old Hwy. 133. I am concerned about the possible contamination
of surface and ground water from the large open stockpile and the airborne pollution that may
result from the stockpile and the increased volume of coal to be transported by the proposed
conveyor.
* I understand that Bowie Resources Ltd. has proposed in the technical revsions, the relocation and
doubling in size of a sedimentation pond to be located south of old Hwy. 133, above the river. I feel
very strongly that this four acre foot sedimentation pond and its location above the river could
pose a risk to the river itself. Children swim in that river throughout the summer and their health and
the fish and other creatures who inhabit the river would be at risk from contamination.
* I understand that Bowie Resources Ltd. has proposed the changeover to a long wall mining
operation, increasing their production from 1.3 million tons to 4 million tons of coal per yeaz. What is
the source of additional water needed for the loagwall? Is it water that replenishes the springs in
our area, specifically those that feed the Terror Creek and Reservoir? As long wall mining poses
a greater risk of subsidence, I am greatly concerned about the threat to Terror Ditch water.
* As an individual who highly values the quality of life for all the residents of the North Fork Valley,
I feel that it is imperative that no permit be granted for increased production by Bowie
Resources Ltd. or any mining company until the Environmental Impact Statement, studying the
cumulative impact of all the mining and the proposed increases in this area has been completed.
* I urge you to schedule a public bearing to address Bowie Resources Ltd.'s requested revisions.
Thank you Mr. Dudash, for taking these concerns into consideration,
~" U
M g O' hnughnessy
