Annual Reclamation Reports provide data for the GLUX-1 well from 1988 through 2004. The AHR data
table B-1 shows no significant change to the pH in the GLUX-1 well from September 1988 (pH=7.8) to
September 2004 (pH=7.7)
Iron (Fe) exhibited and overall reduction from 0.140 mg/L in September 1988 to consistently <0.0100 in
September 2004. Over the intervening years there were occasional readings on 0.110 to 0.240 mg/L with one
unexplained spike of 1.64 mg/L, but the Fe value in this well has remained 0.0200 mg/L or less since
September 2000.
TDS measurements from September 1988 through September 2004 show very consistent readings ranging
from 550 mg/L in September 1988 to 510 mg/L in September 2004. No significant changes were recorded in
the TDS of the GLUX-1 well over this 16-year period.
The operator proposes to cease monitoring and abandon the GLUX-1 well after approval of SL-07. Based on
the data presented in the SL-07 application and Txappex Mining Inc.'s annual reclamation reports, I see no
reason to require the operator to continue to mottitor the GLUX-1 well.
I was unsure which monitoring well to document changes, or lack of significant impacts, to the Third White
Sandstone aquifer for this time period.
I also ran through the groundwater flow calculations fox the third white sandstone wells, 93848 and 151991.
Based upon the hydraulic gradients, distance from the closest mined pit (B-pit northern limit), average
permeability, and effective porosity information supplied by the operator in the SL-07 application and the
PHC section of the permit (Section 4.8.3), I agree with the operator's calculations that it will take
approximately 24.5 years, from the cessation of mining and backfill of the pit, before impacts from mining
could reach well 151991. Likewise, the projected time before impacts from mining could reach well 93848 is
29.4 years.
Could you please evaluate the impacts to groundwater for SL-07, and provide comments for inclusion into the
SL-07 findings document? If you have any adequacy concerns that you need the operator to respond to,
please let me know and I will forward your adequacy concerns to the operator.
Thank you for your help.
GW review memo to TAK.doc 2 4/11/2006
