w
Review of Blasting Operations at Robinson Brick Company's Siloam Cla} &tine
2.0 BLASTING IMPACTS ANALYSES
When explosive charges detonate in rock, most of the available chemical energy is used in
breaking and displacing the rockmass. However, some of energy is kinetically released in the form
of vibration causing strain waves, airborne noise and concussion and flying rock. If uncontrolled,
these forms of blast energy can cause injury and damage property.
In this section, GEOTEK evaluates all the potentially damaging effects that blasting might have on
people, animals and property on and near the Siloam Clay Mine. GEOTEK also recommends
specific measures that can be employed to mitigate reviewed blasting impacts.
2.1 Impacts of Blast-Induced Ground Motion and Fracturing:
This purpose of this section is to evaluate the relative potential for all forms of damage that might
occur due to blast-induced ground motion or radial cracking. This section examines their effects
on neighboring property and utility lines and pipes. A short review of blast vibration dynamics is
also included at the beginning of the section to acquaint the reader with various ground motion
measures that are used in structural damage evaluations.
The following blast-motion impacts are analyzed in the indicated subsections:
Damage Concern: Section:
Structural Damage............................... 2.1.2
Buried Utilities Damage....................... 2.1.3
Water Well Damage ............................ 2.1.4
GEOTEK also reviews and comments on the appropriateness of currently proposed blast control
measures and in some areas, GEOTEK recommends additional controls.
GEOTEK&Associates, Inc.
