This is extremely conservative in that (a) Ca is finite in volume, being derived mainly <br />through the potential exchange for Na from the brine and (b) it in not likely that all of the SO, <br />would react, even under equilibrium conditions and infinite time. <br />The results indicate that even under [he conservative situation ascribed [o the model, the <br />maximum reduction in tailings porosity that might occur would be 0.1 ~o. Even if the pond area <br />was reduced to 1/10'h the assumed volume, and even if the porosity was decreased to I/3rd of the <br />assumed value, the tails would still retain a high percent of the assumed porosity. <br />Given the letter from NRCS and the HSI-Geotrans model, I would recommend that TR-30, to <br />place water treatment concentrate in the tailings, be approved. <br />cc: 3ruce Humphries <br />Jim Stevens <br />
