6
a 4 x 5 meter wood frame floor with tongue-and-groove floor boards on a sandstone
slab pier foundation. On top of this floor/foundation was a loose heap of
structural debris. The debris included 2x4 framing, wall lath and stucco,
rafters, sheet metal flashing, corrugated sheet metal, linoleum scraps, and tow
log posts. Numerous nails observed in the debris were all stamped wire nails.
A few items of non-structural debris included sanitary cans and white glass
fragments. Vegetation in the site area was tall and moderately thick, but
patchy. Surface visibility ranged from good to very poor. No evidence was found
of any other buildings or structures. This site was originally recommended not
eligible for the Register, and has lost integrity and information potential since
that time. The present investigation concurs with the recommendation of not
eligible, and no further cultural resource work is recommended.
5MF3978 This isolated find consists of two pieces of abandoned farm
equipment. a steel barrel, and a modified fuel or chemical tank. Loops and
strands of barbed wire are also scattered through the area. These items are
located near an old fenceline in a small uncultivated area among cultivated
fields. The 1966 topographic map shows an unimproved road ending close to the
isolated find location, but no traces of this road are currently visible. Both
of the pieces of farm equipment are older tractor drawn types. One is a plow and
the other is a planter. The planter has an aluminum and plastic attachment that
was apparently added comparatively recently. However, both pieces of equipment
are rusty, and appear not to have been used or moved for many years. An empty.
aerosol, starter fluid can near the planter suggests that a machine, possibly a
tractor, was started at this location within recent years. There are no
indications of structural features or significant debris associated with these
items. This was apparently a field storage area for equipment used in the
adjacent fields. The materials have no historical significance or information
potential. This isolated find is recommended to be not eligible, and no further
cultural resource work is recommended.
Recommendations
The project area as marked at the time of cultural resource inventory does
not contain significant cultural resources. Therefore, the proposed undertaking
will not adversely impact any significant historic properties. Cultural resource
clearance is recommended for the project as surveyed.
