Of the total 168.5 acres, only 18, the Loveland,
can be considered prime farmland, and that only when it is
irrigated with an adequate supply of water. Much of that
18 acres was distn hpd ;n nnnstructin a flood control berm
on the property or will remain unmined. Soils are underlain
by 10 to 22 feet of gravel, which in turn is underlain by
Pierre Shale. The site is designated an Aggregate Resource
Area by the Boulder County Comprehensive Plan.
Soils
Prior to mining in the 1950 's , approximately 150 acres of
the area were occupied by Niwot soils, which are described as
medium to heavy textured, shallow and underlain by sand and
gravel at a depth less than 20 inches from the 'surface. Niwot
soils have a high water table and are subject to occasional
flooding. About 39 acres of this soil were displaced by
mining in connection with construction of the Boulder-Denver
MTurnpike (now U.S. 36) .
E-1
