~~
~~J~~,~1n~ L~.~-
,.
.,

Division of Reclamation
Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman St Rm 215
Denver, CO 81226
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing out of concern regarding the proposed opening of the Coaldale gypsum mine or quarry.
Where is the environmental evaluation of this mine? Has one ever been done? In recent years? And
the effect on people? This mine is to be placed in the middle of a town. Dust and pollution could hurt
the health of many people neazby. Water pollution and well water quality are a potential problem. I do
not see these issues addressed in the mining application in any meaningful way.
Also, wildlife may be hurt by this. The mine is near to the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness area and in
next to federal land. The Coaldale area is where bighorn sheep are being nurtured to encourage a
comeback. Elk are increasing in this area. Eagles and numerous other valuable species are in this azea.
The application says only that no change in wildlife management is expected from before, but where
are the environmental-wildlife studies from "before"?
Why are there no public hearings? Why isn't someone from the Colorado Mining Office coming down
to talk to us?
It seems terribly foolish and dangerous to place a mine in the middle of a town. It seems foolhazdy to
be blasting and polluting the air in an environmentally clean area. More jobs may be lost from tourists,
hunters, and fishermen leaving for somewhere else than will be gained from the mine.
This is the wrong place for a mine. It is not in the interest of the people of Coaldale and it is not in the
interest of the environment:- Please help us!!!!!!!!!
Yours Truly, z~_~, _ i\~%~~~` , ~~=C~ ~1
