~,~.
~>m~
~°'"~`~`• ECOSPHERE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
~,
Frank J. Anesi
Attorney at Law
P.O. Box 2185
Durango, Colorado 81302
July 21, 2004
RE: Threatened/Endangered Species Issues Related to the Sandco, Inc. Proposed Dalton
Pit, La Plata County, Colorado
Dear Mr. Anesi:
Please accept this letter clazifying consumptive use calculations I presented in my June 28s',
2004 communication with your office. Specifically, while calculating expected water depletions
in the Animas River from the proposed 44-acre pond site, I calculated the irrigated land
consumptive use based on the irrigation of approximately 15 acres of land. Based on a recent
conversation I had with David billion of Sandco (personal communication 7/20/04), I
underestimated the acreage of pastureland potentially irrigated on the property. While it is
correct that currently approximately 15-acres are under irrigation, the amount of acreage that can
effectively be irrigated is limited by drought conditions and a currently low azea water table. In
previous years, as much as the entire proposed pond site, 44-acres was under irrigation.
Accordingly, depending upon the elevation of the water table, the consumptive use of inrigated
land on the property ranges from 24.15-afy at 15-acres under irrigation to approximately 70.84-
afy when the entire pasture can be effectively irrigated. These consumptive use volumes were
derived utilizing the Blaney Griddle model that calculates the consumptive irrigation use of the
subject pastureland at approximately 1.61 acre-feet per yeaz per acreage.
Subtracting these volumes from the expected evaporative loss from the future pond site (97-afy)
provides a range of expected depletion between 72.85-afy 26.16-afy depending upon the amount
of under irrigation.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Mike Fitzgerald
Projects Manager
!08 N.
