SAN MIGUEL COUNTY
ROAD AND BRIDGE DEPARTMENT
bIIKE HORNER, SUPERINTENDENT
May 21, 2002
~~~ ~ 3 2002
Durango Field Office Geology ~~iab °~eral~gG~~
701 Camino del Rio
Room 125
Durango, CO 81301
Subject: Request for Technical Revision to San Miguel County's, Norwood Gravel Pit,
M-1981-154
San Miguel County is submitting this request for a technical revision for the purpose of
importing excess fill material to the Norwood Gravel pit. Because it becomes more and
more difficult to dispose of excess material out on job sites, the County is requesting
approval to use the material at the pit to fill and re-slope high walls. During routine
maintenance of the counTy roads, excess material is generated primarily from ditch
cleaning and mudslide cleanup and hauled to the gravel pit. Only natural clean fill or
recycled asphalt chunks from county road. projects aze imported to the site. It is
estimated that up to 1000 cubic yazds per year may be imported. However, on rare
occasions more material may be imported as a result of mudslides on one of the county
roads. In addition, occasionally local contractors look for a site to dispose of fill from
home excavations or other projects which helps the County backf'ill the high wall and
create a 3:1 slope along the east boundary of the pit.
Without the importation of fill, the County would have to leave an unmined slope along
the east boundary that would contain several thousand yazds of gravel.
One final note, any good topsoil that is imported is stored and revegetated for use later
during final reclamation.
A map is attached to delineate the location of imported fill material.
Thank you for your consideration and please let me know if you need additional
information to process this application for technical revision.
Sincerely, ~~~
Mike Horner
Road Superintendent
P.O. Box 426 Norwood, Colorado 81423 Phone: (970) 327-4835 Fax: (970) 327-4090
