RECE~'~ ~~~_ ~
DEC 1 1 ZUU6
MINING PLAN Division of ReGamatlon, EXHIBIT D
Mining and Safely
1. General Mining Plan
The gavel zone is approximately 60 feet thick in an alluvial deposit and is overlain by an
average of 6 inches of topsoil and overburden. As stated in the Introduction, mining began at the
site in 1994 and the top 25-30 feet of the deposit above water table was mined since that time.
Sideselopes aze approximately 2H:1 V or milder. The entire surface azea which will be disturbed
as a result of the mining of the Colona Pit has been disturbed prior to the submission of the
September 2006 amendment; the surface disturbance will not be changed in this amendment,
rather this amendment is to simply allow for United Companies to mine deeper and below the
local static water table. The local static water table is estimated to be approximately 2 feet below
the current pit bottom, or approximately 32 feet below the original surface.
As discussed in the Introduction, the berm around the western perimeter of the pit was removed
and contoured into a rolling landscape approximately 3-5 feet in height at the request of
Montrose County. Details for the landscaping of this berm can be seen in Map Exhibit C-4. This
berm is permanent. It has been vegetated by United.
Prior to the 2006 Amendment, mining was accomplished by dozer and front end loader removing
the raw gravel and loading the material into an in pit portable crusher and screen plant which
produced products of various sizes. Some material was taken to a portable asphalt plant which
was located in the Phase 1 azea and can be seen in the aerial photo on Map C-1. This plant has
since been removed and Phase 1 (above water table) is currently being mined in 2006. The
mining progressed from the northern edge of the permit azea in 1999 to the southern edge in
2005. Mining progressed from north to south by keeping the pit level approximately 2.0 feet
above groundwater at all times. Map C-1 shows the contours of the site after all mining above
water table in the pit was finished at the end of 2005. The Phase 1 azea, where the facilities were
located, was still not mined to the water table.
Colona Pit November 06 D-1
