And if nitrogen is applied at the time of initial seeding, won't that tend to stimulate weed establishment? My
understanding of the rationale for nitrogen fertilization being done in subsequent seasons is that this will allow the
seeds to germinate, then stimulate growth of beneficial vegetation with the nitrogen applications.
If we go with the multi-year fertilization approach, how many seasons of nitrogen application should we bond for?
How many soil tests should we bond for? How much do soil tests cost? Since the initial fertilization requirements
will be based on the results of a soil test, we do not know at this time what the fertilization rates and mixtures will
be, so we should assume for the purpose of estimating the costs that the P-K mixture and rates specified in the
current plan will be used over the entire affected area, and that the urea applications in subsequent seasons will
be as specified in the current plan for as many years as Car{ thinks they are needed.
I think this gets us a more logical and coherent plan than the one described in AM-01; seven applications on the
same spot? What's that all about?
Let me know what you think.
-Allen
-----Original Message--•--
From: Crosby, Erice
Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 12:02 PM
To: Sorenson, Allen
Cc: Mount, Carl
Subject: Henderson Bond
Allen,
One of the clarification points on the reclamation cost estimate is the use of fertilizer on various locations of
the Henderson Mine & Mill. W hat I used to determine the frequency was the reclamation cost estimate
provided by the operator in AM-01. The use of fertilizer varies from 1 application up to 7 applications in the
same spot. After talking this over with Carl, we think that they should revise the fertilizer frequency to only 1
application everywhere. He doesn't see a need for more than one application.....and it will lower the bond
amount.
Do you have an objection to me suggesting this change to Henderson? I want to give Anne a call and tell her
to include it in the ongoing TR. Let me know. Thanks -Erica
