b. The concrete, cinder block and rebaz design that the company proposes
as adequate protection from the Animas River water is described as
being placed only 18 inches to 3 feet below the existing water level.
All the experts agree that if there is a flood or a rapid rise in water, the
level of that reinforcing design would prove to be so inadequate that
we could expect the ddce to disintegrate rapidly. The loss of this dike
could also cause the Animas River to find its way onto our land,
making this company's lack of design thoroughness our problem
It should also be noted that Four Corners Materials is the same company that operates the
Baz D Gravel Pit. This mining operation has drastically reduced vegetative and wildlife
habitat due to the scouring of the river bed. All you need to do is view aerial photographs
from 1960 to 2000 to see what impact poorly conceived and monitored river gravel
- mining can have on ourenvironment. - - - -- -
We encourage you to deny Four Corners Materials their permit to dig the gravel for the
lake at the Thomas Pit until the Army Corp of Engineers has determined that the
company has made all the necessary changes to their existing proposal. At a minimum,
the Corp needs to validate that Fow Corners Materials has taken action to protect
adjoining landowners, river habitat and the aquatic environment for future generations.
i
nd Jose Whe ing
ry 550
CO 81301
ca U.S. Army Corp of Engineers -Durango, CO
U.S. Army Corp of Engineers -Grand Junction, CO
La Plata County Commissioners
La Plata County Planning Department
Colorado Division ofMinerals and Geology -Denver; CO
