4 ~
2/9/05
Mr. Leroy Black
Office of the County Engineer
501 Palmer Suite 227
Delta, Colorado 81416
Dear Leroy:
This report regards the noxious weed situation at the County operated Pig Mesa Gravel
pit located just west of Eckert. I visited this site with the Dist. 1 road foreman, Larry
Record, on Feb. 2, 2005. I had also treated this site for Russian knapweed in 2001 and
2002, so I am familiaz with the location.
The primary state and county listed noxious weed of concern is Russian knapweed. The
main infestations are along the road and fence line at the east entrance, as well as near the
irrigation canal on the west side. Total area infested is probably less than one acre. The
current population is approximately 20 percent of the former infested area before
treatment.
The area that is to be re-contoured to a 3:1 grade is not infested. The area above this
section is also clear of noxious weeds. The primary vegetation there is rabbitbrush, sage,
Indian rice grass and needle and thread grass. This minimizes the threat of infestation
after restoration.
The County Noxious Weed Program will treat the current infestations there with the
herbicide Curtail when conditions aze appropriate, which probably means late April. We
will monitor and treat again as needed. Time required for treatment is 2-3 hours and
about 3 quarts of Curtail in 20 gallons of water with anon-ionic surfactant will be
applied. Follow up treatments in the fall of 2005 will be made if needed. If you have
further questions, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Webb Callicutt
Coordinator, Delta County Noxious Weed Program
