~1 •
' Figure 1 shows the current surface water and ground water monitoring system associated with
' the San Luis Gold Project. The area of concern expressed by the CMLRD staff is in tl~e vicinity
of the tailings facility and collection pond (near wells M-6, M-7, M-8 and M-9).
To develop additional information related to the local ground water gradient, it ins proposed that
' two additional monitoring wells (designated M-12 and )\4-13) be installed at the locations shown
in Figure 2. These locations should allow the development of the local ground water gradient
' in terms of magnitude and direction, while at the same tune providing additional downgradient
monitoring from the tailings facility and the collection pond.
' Detailed lithologic logs will be obtained from each of these boreholes and will be used to the
extent possible to correlate to other existing data from boreholes drilled in the vicinity of the
tailings facility and collection pond. Existing geophysical logs will be evaluated to assess
' whether similar geophysical log suites in these wells could help correlate data between
boreholes. However, the nature of the Santa Fe Formation is such that correlation between
boreholes may be very difficult due to the conglomeritic nature of the deposits. No marker beds
have been identified in the drilling done to date in the Santa Fe Formation.
1
Once the monitoring wells are installed, pump tests will be conducted in each of tlhe wells, with
' the other monitoring wells used as observation points. The pump test data derived will be used
to model the ability of these wells to create a hydraulic barrier downgradient from the tailings
facility and collection pond, should remediation become necessary in the future.
' During each pump test, time-dependent water quality samples will be obtained from the
' discharge and will be submitted to an analytical laboratory for analysis of total cyanide
concentration. These samples will be collected, handled and delivered to the laboratory
' according to the QA/QC protocols (Halepaska and Associates, Inc., April 1992),
' The Theis non-equilibrium equation for unsteady radial flow to a well will be us@d to evaluate
whether the installed wells can control the ground water gradient downgradient pf the tailings
' -3-
tJ
