Ef FEC TIVE DATE P4GE <br />HC-O.AC-02 0 1106!92 71 of 104 <br />matrix spike duplicate analyses vary considerably by method and a <br />covered during analytical method training. <br />Blank Spike <br />Blank spikes are formulated from laboratory pure water which is spiked <br />with target analytes prior to sample preparation and analYSis. <br />Blank spikes are often analyzed if sufficient field sample volumes are not <br />provided for matrix spiking. <br />Blank spikes are used to measure the percent recovery of target analytes <br />in an interference-free matrix. <br />Internal Standards - Oraanics Analvsis <br />Internal standards are non-target analytes of known concentration which <br />are added to the samples following sample preparation but prior to <br />instrument analysis. <br />Internal standards are used to measure the efficiency of the instrumentation <br />in quantifying target analytes and for performing calculations by relative <br />response factors. <br />Surrogate Spikes -Organics Analvsis <br />Surrogate spikes are non-target analytes of known concentration which are <br />added to the samples prior to sample preparation and instrument analysis. <br />Surrogate spikes are used to measure the efficiency of III steps of the <br />sample preparation and analytical method in recovering target analytes from <br />the sample matrix. <br />It is assumed that the non-target surrogate compounds behave identically <br />to the target analytes in the method. <br />Field Sample Spikes <br />
