I represent one of the four James families that live on the James Ranch, which is
located south and west of the proposed excavation.
I applaud the clean up intentions of the Bryce and Thompson families. Creating a lake of
the Whispering Pines sewage treatment remains will improve the azea dramatically.
However, I have two concerns that pertain to you and yow office: One, the proximity of
the lake to the existing river channel My second concern is one of planning. I would
like to see a comprehensive time line and management plan given for the entire permit.
The proposed upstream mining and channel modifications will have a direct impact on
the now proposed lake extraction. Decisions about the lake extraction are being made
with out knowing exactly what will occur with in the permitted area upstream.
Personally I am in favor of pit mining over in channel mining as long as it is done
responsibly. I and professionals I have consulted with, believe the proposed pit
extraction on the Thomas Pit is dangerously close to the river. The bank protection and
stabilization measures are not adequate. I realize bank armoring and in channel
construction is the concern of the Army Corps (a letter addressing those concerns has
been sent to them). I urge you to work with them and Four Corners to come up with a
plan that addresses long term stabilization and safety for the operator, owner of the land,
and neighbors. The plan as it exists is not adequate.
Thank you for your consideration.
Regards,
6t-~- ay..e.`~
Dan ames =
cc: Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
ATTN: Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board
Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
