6) After seeding, mulch should be a lied to the area to help
moderate soil temperatures and to improve soil moisture
conditions . Grass hay or cereal • grain straw free of weed
seeds is recommended . At least half of the material should be
10 inches or more in leng•.h. Do not use fine materials .
Apply 4000 pounds of mulch/acre to the soil surface . Mulching
should not be done when wind velocities exceed 15 miles per
hour. The mulch should be anchored with commercial netting
products or mechanically . The latter can be accomplished
using a heavy disk implement with dull blades . to crimp the
mulch into the soil 2 to 3 inches deep . Crimping should not
sever the mulch .
Well cured feedlot or barnyard manure may also be used as a
combination mulch/organic matter and nutrient source for the
seeded area . The recommended application rate is at least 20
tons per acre , spread uniformly over the area. The manure
must be of a type that has 60% or more , by weight, heavy
chunks 5 inches or more in diameter. Granular or powdery
manure for fertilization or mulch purposes is not recommended .
7) All tillage , seeding and crimping operations should be
performed across the slope when practical .
8) During seedling establishment , weeds should be controlled
by mowing or by using an approved herbicide . The SCS can
provide herbicide recommendations for weed control in grass
seedings .
9) The area MUST a protected from trampling , grazing or
vehicle tra is until the seeding is well esta s e .
Normally at least two growing seasons of protoction is needed .
If you have any questions or need additional assistance ,
please contact the USDA Soil Conservation Service at 719-543-
8384 or at the above address .
