On May 15, 2002, DMG issued its recommendation for approval of the application for
amendment number 001 (AM-01) to the Thomas Pit reclamation permit, over objections.
This document is intended to explain the process by which DMG arrived at its approval
recommendation over objections.
The application for AM-01 to the Thomas Pit permit was filed with DMG on February 15,
2002. The application proposes a 5 acre increase to the permit area to result in a total
permit area of approximately 35 acres. The proposed 5 acre expansion will contain a
surface sand and gravel extraction site located adjacent to the Animas River and within
the 100 year floodplain of the river. The 5 acre area will be reclaimed as a pond to
support wildlife habitat post mining land use.
Objections Received
The public comment period for AM-01 closed on April 8, 2002. During the public
comment period, DMG received written objections from the following:
