Summary - 2 -
Does Rocky Mountain.equate.the proposed. mining operation as creating jobs? Since
automation has taken over. the. majority. ofsoperations,-is this also possible in the
case of Rocky Mountain? If so; employment would be minimum but the pollution would
be great; and is this type of operation.worth.what.it would do to the safety and
health of the people both in Canon City and Florence?
Many Senior Citizens move to Canon City and Florence because of the CLEAN AIR, and
they contribute to the economy.of those cities a1so;..however, if Rocky Mountain is
granted a permit fora mining ppera.tion and.their operation. pollutes the air with
toxins, it is-very likely the Senior Citizens.may.move out.
Sometime ago; we had our property.surveyed and stakes-.were laid aut so that :we knew
the location of it. Undoubtedly, the stakes.a.re sti.il there. We intended to fence
it in; however, due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to accomplish
this.
At that time,.we also. noted:
1. ..There were homes and people living in that area;
'2..'.thAt:area`.has a`.beautfful~~vi.ey~;
3. would be a great opportunity and an-ideal location to start
a housing division;
4. would be. an ideal.area.for country living; and,
if Rocky Mountain .is granted a LIFE: OF. MINE permit, that will never happen as they
will spoil the aesthetic beauty of`~the area.
THE ROLE OF THE MINED LAND .RECLAMATION BOARD, (BOARD): '
-The Board's Jurisdiction:. does .not include land use.decisions,.visual or .economic im-
pacts, impacts.to public. roads, noise and other nuisance and socio-economic issues.
We are aware of this.
These types of issues are handled.by local government and are outside the jurisdiction
of the Board and .Office.
COMMENTS:
;.,
1. As noted above; these types of .issues are handled by local government.
a. When we received the PUb1ic Notice from Rocky Mountain, I called the
Fremont County Clerk.& Recorder's.Office :fow more information. I was
told I could obtain more information from them;; and to call Canon City
^' .;:P.lagning-.&Zoning~ :which'I:did...
b. .Copy of my March 28,.2003 letter to.the Division of..Minerals and
Geology was.sent to them.by,Cer.tified•.Mail;.return.receipt requested,
hoping they would take some action in this matter.
c. Canon City Planning.& Zoning accepted ahe mail.: by signing the return
receipt on March 31; and, afterv accepting it; they refused it and
.returned the`roai,l. (unopened) to me. ,
d. We feel, by. their act of. not accepting the-mail and; therefore; not
goting and considering our.:objections.and concerns, we .Were ignored
.and discriminated against.:
e. 'I also called Florence. Planning & Zoning as it is possible the
.property could border: Florence-and Canon. City ahd might be under their
jurisdiction. The property: has: sometimes been described as being near
or. in the Hardscrabble area.
I talked to Mr. Don.Moore and.expla.ined the. situation :. I'wa~ssiriformed~:
-Rocky Mountain could not trespass.a.n our property-for use in their.
mining operation,. which ,we knew .they could not.do; however, we will., no
doubt, check on .it .periodically.
? al.I::also.sent him a copy:,of.my Marc h. 28 letter:to.Division Of. Minerals .
and Geology. They .signed the returm receipt and accepted the .letter;.
however; to 'date, we have heard nothing.from.them.
What would b,~ Rocky Mountain's motive in havirig;a mining operation adjoining our
property when 'fhere.is ample space.in other ''areas?, The mining operation would.
directly and adversely affect us; and we object to this..intrusion. The property has
been in the family since the late 1800's; and. it was the wish that the family keep it.
