Rationale for Recommendation for Approval, Over Objections; Regular 112 <br />Construction Materials Amendment AM-Ol, <br />Oldcastle SW Group, Inc., dba United Companies of Mesa County <br />Berry Pit, File No. M-1977-132 <br />September 9,2002 <br />Introduction <br />On September 9,2002 the Division of Minerals and Geology ("Division") issued its recommendation for approval of <br />a 112 Construction Materials Amendment Application, over objections. This document is intended to provide a <br />basis for the Division's recommended approval over various concerns and reasons for objection to the Berry Pit AM- <br />Ol, File No. M-1977-132. <br />The Oldcastle SW Group, Inc. dba United Companies of Mesa County Amendment Ol application was found <br />complete and considered filed with the Division on June 10, 2002. The site is located one mile east of the town of <br />Meeker in Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The property is located in Section 24 of Township 1 North, Range 97 <br />West of the Sixth Principal Meridian. The current permit area is 42.75 acres in size, an additiona148.46 acres has <br />been applied for in Amendment Ol, to increase the permit size to 91.21 acres. The total disturbed azea is progosed to <br />be 67.6 acres. <br />No more than 45.5 acres of mined land will be disturbed at any one time. This includes 8.0 acres for processing, 4.5 <br />acres of soil/overburden stockpiles, 5.0 acres of product stockpiles and 28.0 acres of active mining azea including <br />topsoil stripping, active pit and roads. There will be 12.1 acres of partially reclaimed area and 10.0 acres of fully <br />reclaimed area. Mining in the Amendment 1 area will take place to the south of the current permit azea and north of <br />Colorado Highway 64. The Amendment azea will be mined in strips of 200 feet width. Soil and overburden from <br />Strip 2 will be placed in Strip 1. Strip 2 will be mined out and the process will be repeated until Strip 9 is mined out. <br />A berm at least 20 feet high will be left along the southern edge of the mining area during mining for visual and <br />noise abatement. The site will be reclaimed to achieve a combination of postmining land uses including dry <br />rangeland and wildlife habitat. <br />
