Ii
' 4 Irrigation
Seepage of water during the summer irrigation season from the Taylor and Gill irrigation ditch
1 and laterals adjacent to the Stegner Farm, Roe, and Martin properties is the principal source of
recharge to the shallow aquifer. Prior to the initiation of mining, the Stegner Farm was flood
I 1 irrigated. Cessation of flood irrigation at the Stegner Farm eliminated a portion of the local
recharge to the shallow aquifer.
Irrigation in the area surrounding the Stegner Farm usually starts in the late spring or early
summer and stops in the fall. Groundwater levels in the local monitoring wells show a
pronounced rise when water is released to the irrigation ditch and a rapid decrease when
irrigation is stopped. This observation shows the importance of irrigation water seepage as
recharge and in maintaining groundwater levels in the azea. Groundwater Level increases during
the irrigation season are typically about 4 feet. This effect is well documented in the monitoring
well hydrographs (Figure 9) for the LaFarge wells discussed below in Section 5.3.
6
