90" conduit for a Bureau of Reclamation project in Lake County. In 1999, Lake County
converted the Pit from a 110 to a 112 permit. The conversion allowed for an expansion
of the permit area from approximately 12.9 acres to a permitted azea of 23.60 acres.
This requested expansion will increase the total permitted area to one half of a quarter
section (80 acres). The County utilizes this pit almost exclusively for the mining of
gravel to make pavement and road sanding materials for the exclusive use of the County.
The pit is operated from May through September or October depending on weather.
Based on budget constraints and stockpile size, the County may not operate the pit at all
during some years.
Given, the historic use of the property and the fact that the only neighbor is another
gravel pit operation, the County will likely utilize the entire permitted area prior to
initiating reclamation activities. Although the County reserves the right to begin
reclamation at its own discretion as budget constraints and man power allow. It is the
County's intention to begin sloping the east side of the existing permitted pit and
continue to maintain the expanded pit area to the desired 3:1 sloping as mining
progresses. Replacement of topsoil and vegetation generally will begin when the
permitted area is depleted. Depending on operational conveniences, the existing pit area
in the easterly portion of the permit area may be reclaimed as mining progresses westerly
away from this area of disturbance.
The proposed post mining land use for the permitted area is likely to be public open space
and wildlife habitat. The existing caning for the permit area is "Agricultural/Forestry."
The Lake County future land use map identifies this area for "Mining Resource
Protection." Final reclamation of the site will be directed to protect the final land use of
the property. The site will have no structures that are mining related left on the site after
final reclamation. All coashvction materials will be removed from the property during
final reclamation activities.
