The application proposes to expand the mining area,
but continue at about the same rau of production as has historically occunied. Five phases
aze proposed, covering about 250 acres total. The applicant estimates mining would take
place over a period of 25 to 35 years. The method of mining involves bla:sdng, removing
the overburden (which is generally a calcareous limestone slab), then remtving the high
grade limestone below. This results in a solid slab surface with a slope oI' about 23%.
There is little or no topsoil to recover. Reclamation involves establishment of "tree
islands", stone berm filters (to slow runoff), and seeding the loadout benches. Schematic
drawings for the mining and reclamation activities are on page 2 ~ .The
applicant's mining plan and reclamation plans are described on pages 7 ~ t:hn, 26
The haul route from the reclamation plans are described on pages 28 .The
haul route from the quarry uses paved portions of several County Roads; Holnam also
states they maintain 4.1 miles of unpaved County Road 21 near the quarry. They estimate
an average of 20 truckloads of material leave the site per weekday, going u> the cement
plant north of LaPorte.
LARIMER COUNTY BCC 1/10/94 sue.tECT SLAB CANYON LI]vIESTONE
PLANNING STAFF REPORT QUARRY SPECIAL REVIEW
LCPZ - 32 (~ O/B6)
