1 3.2 Section 300 -Bases '
2 3.2.1 Section 304 -Aggregate Base Course '
3 304.01 Description. This work consists of furnishing and placing one or more courses of
4 aggregate and additives, if required, on a prepared subgrade.
5 '
6 Materials
7 304.02 Aggregate, The aggregates shall meet the requirements of subsection 703.03. '
8
9 Acceptance will be based on random samples taken from each lift.
10 '
11 304.03 Commercial Mineral Fillers. Portland cement shall conform to subsection 701.01.
12 Hydrated lime shall conform to subsection 712.03.
13 '
14 Construction Requirements
15 304.04 Placing. If the required compacted depth of the aggregate base course exceeds 6

16
inches, it shall be constructed in two or more layers of approximately equal thickness. The '
17 maximum compacted thickness of any one layer shall not exceed 6 inches. When vibratory or
18 other approved types of special compacting equipment aze used, the compacted depth of a single '
19 layer may be increased to 8 inches upon request, provided that specified density is achieved and
20 written approval is given.
21 ,
22 304.05 Mixing. The Contractor shalt mix the aggregate by methods that insure a thorough and
23 homogenous mixture.
24

25
304.06 Shaping and Compaction. Compaction of each layer shall continue until a density ,
26 of not less than 95 percent of the maximum density determined in accordance with AASHTO T
27 180 has been achieved. The surface of each layer shall be maintained during the compaction

28
operations so that a uniform texture is produced and the aggregates are firmly keyed. Water shall '
29 be uniformly applied during compaction in the quantity necessary for proper consolidation.
30 '
31 The surface of the base course will be tested with a 10 foot straightedge, or other approved
32 device. The surface shall be tested prior to the applicatio^ of any primer or pavement. The
33 variation of the surface from the testing edge of the straightedge between any two contacts with '
34 the surface shall not exceed Y< inch. All irregulazities exceeding the specified tolerance shall be
35 corrected to the satisfaction of the Engineer at no additional cost to the Department.
36 ,
37 The above compaction and straightedge requirements shall not apply to shoulder gravel.
38 Compaction of shoulder gravel shall be accomplished by wheel rolling, as directed.
39 ,
40 304.07 Method of Measurement. Aggregate base course will be measured by the ton, or by
41 the cubic yard compacted in place.
42 ,

,
3-20
G:\101\00100 OZW\Repons\KP\Techniwl Specifications.tloc FeEruery 3, 2006
