DAILY REPORT

PROJECT NAME: SAN LUIS PROJECT NUMBER: 14732.00
REPORT DATE: 4/8/97
T0: DAVE HALLMAN, SRK PROJECT ENGINEER
FROM: GLENN GUYER, SRK SENIOR FIELD TECHNICIAN
SUBJECT: RECLAMATION REVIEW WITH THE STATE OF COLORADO AND BATTLE
MOUNTAIN GOLD REPRESENTATIVES FOR DESIGN OF THE TAILING:+
IMPOUNDMENT SPILLWAY, THE DESIGN FOR FUTURE DRAINAGE ACROSS THE
TAILINGS IMPOUNDMENT AND WEST PIT RECLAMATION DRAINAGE PLAN.
At 0800 hrs. I arrived on the mine site and met Ron Zumwalt,
Safety Superintendent, San Luis Mine. We toured the mines pit and
tailings impoundment. We met with Jim Willshau, Owner of SLV
Earth Movers, Inc., the contractor for reclamation.
At 0920 hrs. Mr. Jim Dillie, Colorado State, arrived on site.
After a tour of the tailings impoundment and the east ar.~d west
pit areas, Mr. Willshau, Mr. Zumwalt, Mr. Dillie and I discussed
the future reclamation plans and design of the tailings
impoundment spillway.
Mr. Dillie stated that he was primarily concerned that there be
no breaches in the liner at the tailings impoundment, tY,~at a half
percent fall be designed from the east end of the tailings
impoundment to the spillway, that a review and approval by the
state agencies be done, after the design for water shed run-off
across the tailings from the south was completed and that the
design for the spillway be reviewed and approved by the state
agencies prior to construction, in the area of the west pit, he
stated that, he had no concerns that the drainage from this area
be located wherever it was practical and not necessarily where
shown on the reclamation plan. He further stated that he had no
problem with event ponding with a standpipe to a culvert
crossing beneath the county road for relief, as long as there was
sediment control and water flow velocity dissipators prior to
reaching the creek. He reviewed the buttressing of the north end
of the pit in progress and stated that where necessary
buttressing in the pit could be done where deemed appropriate as
long as those areas defined for reclamation were completed.
The reclamation contractor attempted to cross the northern
portion of the tailings with a 325 (CAT) track-hoe which became
bogged down. Attempts to remove the track-hoe using a chain and
D-S (CAT) dozer, were unsuccessful. It was felt that the track-
hoe was in approximately twenty feet of tailings.
The reclamation contractor had damaged the liner at the east side
of the tailings impoundment. The area was shown to Mr. Dillie
and was told that a contractor was to be on site within
