SOP: Chain of Custody, <br />Handling, Packing, Shipping <br />Standard Operating Procedure: <br />Chain-of-Custody, Handling, Packing, and Shipping <br />Scope and Application <br />This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) describes the chain-of-custody, handling, packing, and shipping <br />procedures for the delivery of samples so that samples aze protected from cross-contamination, tampering, mis- <br />identification, and breakage, and are maintained in a controlled environment from the time of collection until <br />receipt by the analytical laboratory. <br />Personnel Qualifications <br />Field sampling personnel will have current Mine health and safety training. In addition, field sampling personnel <br />will be versed in the relevant SOPS and possess [he skills and experience necessary to successfully complete the <br />desired field work. <br />III. Equipment List <br />The following materials, as required, will be available during chain-of-custody, handling, packing, and shipping <br />procedures: <br />• indelible ink pens; <br />' • polyethylene bags (resealable-type); <br />• cleaz packing tape, strapping tape, duct tape; <br />• custody seal evidence tape; <br />• appropriate sample containers, labels, and chain-of-custody forms; <br />• lazge (30 to 40 gallon) insulated coolers; <br />• ice; <br />' cushioning and absorbent material; <br />• thermometer; and <br />• field logbook. <br />' IV. Cautions <br />' If methanol preservation is used in soil samples, shipping containers must not exceed 500 mL total volume of <br />methanol and must be labeled "This aackaee conforms to 49 CFR 173.4." <br />V.
