i ;.;
~..
~`~ `~° ECOSPHERE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
_~
June 17, 2002
Mr. Brian Kimmel
Southwest Land Services, Inc.
842'/~ Main Ave
Durango, Colorado 81302
RE: Sandco Reconnaissance Sarvey for Wetlands and Threatened/Endangered Species
Issues, La Plata County, Colorado
Dear Brian:
This letter CIITn ari~ec the findings of a field reconnaissance survey conducted by my staff on
June 7, 2002, of a potential future Sandco, Inc. aggegate mining site in the Animas Valley. In
particulaz, and in response to a request from Southwest Land Services, Ecosphere Environmental
Services biologist Carl Everson surveyed approximately 50 acres for the presence of wetlands
and potential threatened/endangered (T&E) species issues.
No wetlands are present in the proposed gravel pit area. In terms of T&E species issues,
potential nesting and winter roosting habitat exists in the project azea for bald eagles. However,
no eagle nests are currently present, nor is the area known to be used by eagles for winter
roosting. Bald eagles are commonly seen along the Animas River. Some cottonwood trees may
be removed to develop the gavel pit. No other T&E issues exist as a resuh of surface
disturbance on the site.
The results of our reconnaissance survey are based on our field tour of the project area as shown
by Mr. David DIllon, Sandco, Inc. No formal survey plat (legal description) of the subject
property was available to Ecosphere at the time of the survey.
Please contact me if you have any questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Mike Fitzgerald
Project Manager
108 N.
