The mine has been subject to mining and reclamation permit M-77-
287, granted to Union Cazbide Corporation on June 1, 1978. Umetco Minerals
Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Union Cazbide Corporation. The mine is
located in Section 23 of Township 46 North, Range 17 West, NMPM (refer to attached
map). The landowner of the affected land is the U. S. Department of the Interior,
administered by the Bureau of Land Management whose representative is:
Lynn Lewis
U.S. Department of the Interior
Bureau of Land Management
Uncompahgre Basin Resource Area
2502 South Townsend
Montrose, Colorado 81401
(970)240-5305
(970) 250-5367 FAX
The portal was closed in June 1996. Site reclamation was conducted in the fall of 1998.
Ventilation raises were capped or backfilled, mine spoils were removed from the
drainage, and the mine spoils pile was re-graded and covered with earthen material.
Mine related debris, power lines, and telephone lines were removed or buried on site.
Access roads were closed and all disturbed areas were seeded. Reclamation activities
continued intermittently in 1999 and 2000. A large storm event in August 1999 damaged
the toe of the mine spoils pile. Drainage channels at the site were repaired and improved
in the spring of 2000. A recent photograph of the Nil Mine spoils pile and drainage
channel is attached.
In addition to the above-described reclamation, Umetco also voluntazily closed mine
openings and repaired damages caused bypre-law mining operations in the area.
02-069.doc
