~~ .
The pore volumes would be collected in collection reservoirs
which have been purged of oxygen bearing air. An inert gas such ae
Argon would be used in these collection reservoirs. This collection
methodology is an attempt to arrest the oxidation process once the
leachate has exited from the tailings solids. The bottom of sample
column would not be exposed to air during the collection of each pore
volume since the drainage line iron the column would be connected
to the collection reservoir. After collecting the full yore volume
the bottom o! the sample column would be opened to atmosphere for
a minimum of 48 hours prior to initiating the sequence for each
succeeding por• volumes.
3.4 PORE y0L0!!E COLLBCTIQX 6lfD ANALYSIS
As mentioned previously live pore volumes would be collected
from each column. The first pore volume xouid probably be mostly
the interstitial tailings liquor being displaced by the xettiaq
front of simulated rainwater/anoxmelt. Therefore the second pore
volume would be composed of leachate produced by the interaction o!
the simulated rainwater/saowmelt and the tailings solids. It ie
proposed to teat the first, second and fifth pore volumes from each
column. These specific pore volumes xould be tested for the following
paraaetars:
pY, Conductivity, Ammonia, Najor Cations (calcium, Magnesium,
Potassium, Sodiml), Najor Anions (Alkalinity, Bicarbonate,
Carbonate, Chloride, Fluoride, Sulfide, Nitrate, flitrite,
Sulfate), Total Dissolved Solids, Total, Free, and 1i.A.D.
Cyanide, plus the following dissolved metals:
Aluminum, Arseaie, Bariur, Boron, Cadaium, Chromium
itotal), Copper, Iron, Lead, Manganese, Mercury,
Molybdenum, Nickel, Selenium, Silver & Zinc
4.0 COTS
This testing program is intended to be a guideline for she modeling
to be perfoned with these columns. During the operation of the columns,
observations will be made regarding the behavior of the solids and
leachate. Changes, additions and deletions rill be made to the program as
the testiap progresses based on tAeae observations.
