- 8 -

base metal mines in British Columbia and Yukon which often contain more
sulfide minerals than coal mine samples. The purpose was to assess the
accuracy and utility of the techniQUes to predict AMD formation and to
examine some aspects of the initial step in acid generation. The role of
particle size and presence of bacteria (Thiobacillus ferrooxidans) was also
studied in the humidity cell experiments.
Blending of potential acid producing rocks with acid consuming
rocks has been suggested as an effective material management technique to
prevent the formation of AMD (35). The effect of blending on a small scale
on AMD production was examined in two humidity cell experiments.
1
