Lillie:
This letter serves as a request to end the usage of hydrogen
peroxide in the collection pond at BMRI's San Luis Project.
Please reference the Division's letter to BMG on January 11, 1993
which states that, "Battle Mountain Gold will continue to use the
present hydrogen peroxide or other Division approved collection
pond treatment system. This treatment will continue until
cyanide levels of the water at the discharge pipe from the
tailings dam reaches permit standards and cessation is lapproved
by the Division." Hydrogen peroxide treatment of the ciollection
pond was started in response to the Division's concern that
cyanide levels in the collection pond may fluctuate to such an
extent that the concentrations could be harmful to wildlife. The
tailings area cyanide concentrations have been signifioantly
below the 50 ppm wildlife threshold as established by the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service ("Cyanide Hazards to Fish, Wildlife,
and Invertebrates: A Synoptic Review," Fish and Wildlife
Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, December 1991).
The underdrain monthly average for September 1994 was 3.15 ppm
CN-wad and 3.78 ppm CN-total and October 1994 was 1.48 ppm CN-wad
grid 1.87 ppm CN-total. Both averages are below our opBrating
permit standards. The enclosed table shows cyanide values from
September 14, 1994 to November 28, 1994. The samples $how that
the underdrain has been consistently below our permit standards
since September 14. Daily samples of the underdrain b@gan once
it was determined that values had been consistently lower than
our permit standards for five weeks in a row. Prior tm the daily
sampling, the cyanide concentrations have steadily dropped.
A SUFSID/AF Y OF BA7TLF MOUATAIN GOLD COMPANY
P.O.
