Box 881215
Steamboat Springs, CO 80488
(970) 879-5951
February 4, 1998 RECEIVED
Mr. James Burnell FEB 05 1998
Division of Minerals and Geology 0
Department of Natural Resources ;.,,Sion ofMinerdls&G9 b9Y
1313 Sherman St. , Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
RE : Modification of Notice of Intent to Explore for Coal No. X-
96-219-01 , Cottonwood Land Company.
Dear Mr. Burnell :
I appreciate the opportunity to have spoken with you recently.
As we discussed, Cottonwood Land Company (CLC) requests a
modification to the above referenced NOI .
This modification request consists of the addition of fourteen
exploration drill holes . Also included in this modification
request is the relocation of the previously permitted seismic
exploration. Twelve of these holes, as well as the seismic
exploration also fall under the jurisdiction of our Federal Coal
Exploration License.
The proposed federal drill holes are labeled Fed-54 through Fed-
65. The two remaining holes are located on privately owned lands
and are labeled PDH-32 and PDH-33 . A11 holes are shown, along
with their associated access routes, on the attached Map 1 .
Table 1 identifies the location, depths, surface and coal
ownership. Table 2 describes the acreage of anticipated
disturbance associated with the drilling activity.
The modified location of the seismic exploration is also shown on
Map 1 . A total of eleven miles of exploration is proposed.
Table 3 illustrates the location and surface ownership within the
area of seismic activities .
It is anticipated that the seismic survey will be primarily
conducted utilizing a truck mounted "P-shooter" system providing
the energy source. The "P-shooter" method consists of a weight
drop system, which allows for very minimal surface disturbance.
Where access by truck is not feasible, the shot hole system of
data acquisition as described in the NOI and FCEL applications
will be employed. In this case, it is anticipated that a small
ATV-type auger drill will conduct drilling. The holes created by
