N D U M
T0: Jim Pendleton, Ph.D.
FROM: Cliff Shutt
DATE: April 17, 1992
SUBJECT: Chemical Analytical Matrix

P.2
I would like to confirm in writing what we discussed this morning by telephone.
1. Your suggestion of using ice to keep the samples at 5'C is certainly
sound, however, with the two (2) days that it takes to get from San Luis
to Denver by UPS, I am net sure that this would do any good. 70
compensate for potential VoTatizatien of HCN, we stabilize the Ph at +11.0
and make a presumption, therefore, that all cyanide is present as {CN}",
If you still prefer the use of ice, we shall, of course, oblige,
2. You referred to there being no description 1n the preViou~ memo about ~~ls
procedures for well sampling. We are charged only with cyanide ,<:
detoxification and i know that BMG is working with Harry on the well -~
sampling procedures.
3. Your request that a series of analyses be completed on the pond so as to
give a three-dimensional picture of cyanide distribution is well
understood. I shall be going to San Luis an Tuesday, April 21, to
complete such sampling. Rather than trying to discuss a sampling matrix
here, not knowing what the conditions are going to be like, I hope that
you will agree that I can describe the matrix that was completed.
I shall take between 20 and 40 samples throughout the depth of the lower
pond, which is currently used as the tailings pond.
This sampling wiiT be repeated, perhaps once every two (2) weeks; we can
decide on sampling frequency when you return to oenver.
Although we did not discuss this matter, I presume that the matrix that you
presently have is satisfactory for the moment?
Regards -
.~°rCy
