Its molecular configura-
tion provides functional groups that improve
settling, clarification, thickening and dewatering
of mineral processing slurries.
Charge in Solution ...... ..........Cationic
Appearance ............ .......Slight haze
Color .................. .......Pale amber
Odor ................. ............Slight
pH (Neatl .............. ..............4.5
Viscosity .............. ......See Figure 1
Freeze Point ........... .............14°F
Density ............... ........9.091b/gal
DOSAGE
Clarification and Thickening ..............1-20 ppm
Dewatering Aid .......................5-201b/ton
FEEDING
Concentrated solutions of NALCO 8852 are corrosive to
lead, copper alloys, aluminum, and mild steel. Mild steel
tanks, pumps, and lines are satisfactory for handling
dilute (less than 10%1 solutions.
Care must be exercised in selecting pumps for undiluted
NALCO 8852 in cold climates, as low temperatures
increase product viscosity. If low
ambient temperatures will be encountered, avoid long
transfer lines or provide these lines with heat tracing
and insulation.
NALCO 8852 can be fed neat or as a diluted stock
solution. When preparing a stock solution in warm
water IfiO°F or over) 5 minutes mixing is sufficient. For
colder water, additional mixing would be required. Use
a positive displacement pump to meter the product or
solution into a water line where it can be continuously
diluted before application.
Product application point is best determined by plant
evaluation. Normally, application sufficiently upstream
to ensure vigorous agitation and provide complete
mixing is necessary for good coagulation. In some
circuits, however, it has been found that Nalco
coagulant added directly to the slurry at, or very shortly
before, the thickener centerwell yields superior results.
Stability of the coagulated particles is always an
important consideration. Jar and cylinder tests are
helpful in determining the effect of agitation of
flocculated particles.
In filtration applications, it is extremely important to
feed the NALCO 8852 so that all solids in the heavy
slurry are adequately conditioned. Usually, a distribu-
tion header box feeding the filters is an ideal spot for
application.
When NALCO 8852 is used in conjunction with high
molecular weight anionic (or nonionic) polymer, check
relative points of application to determine which
product should be fed first. The best application point
should give the best all around clarity, settling rate, and
underflow density.
(Continued on Reverse Sidel
8852
