WATER INFORMATION
the gravel pit will be dewatered during the mining process. Some of the water that is pumped out
of the pit will be used to process the gravel and the rest will return directly to the Arkansas River.
The process water will be used primazily for washing and will amount to a use of about 3500 gpm.
Out of this process water, a small portion will be consumptively used and the rest will return to
the system. As described previously, there is a connection between the alluvial aquifer and the
surface water system. Accordingly, the ground water that is consumed results in a depletion to the
Arkansas River. From an administrative standpoint these depletions must be replaced with a State
approved substitute water supply plan (SWSP) in accordance with Senate Bill 89-120. Transit Mix
currently has a SWSP in place that covers the Pueblo West pit and the East pit and has requested a
renewal for the existing plan that is updated to cover the proposed mining activity at the East pit.
The SWSP quantifies the depletions that may arise from the operation of the pit and identifies the
source of replacement water. In this case, the depletions will be covered by senior water rights that
are owned by Transit Mix and by water leased from the City of Pueblo. As described in the plan,
the projected consumptive use at the Pueblo East pit is approximately 19.6 ac-ft/yr and includes
water lost to evaporation and water consumed in the washing process.
SWSP Number: M86016
Well Permit: New Permit Application Under Review
(Existing well permit is 045228-F)
Pueblo East Pit Amendment Exhibit K Page 3
