Steve and Maria Herndon
anv rezoning, es~cially to an industriaUcommercial zone, which would permit this hi volume
of gravel ~ extraction, asphalt production and concrete production.
The wind constantly blows in our area. Anv smells and airborne contaminants will defmitely be
a problem for us. We definitely feaz anv concrete airborne contaminates as well as the smell of
asphalt•
We have wildlife here that we enjoy; Hawks, Herons, Antelope, and even Elk. All this would be
forced away from our area to escape the traffic, lights, noise and smells.
There is also the concern of our property values dropping. Traditionally, residential property
around messy industrial plants is much lower than comparable suburban azeas. This is not
acceptable. Even the town of Calhan is going to have these problems. No one wants to live in a
smelly azea around an Asphalt plant.
We do not want to live by an Industrial area. That is one of the reasons why we bou t this
property in Calhan As Rocky Mountain told the people at their pit on Hwy 115 "emu shouldn't
have built a house by a pit " We did not build our house by a pit. We have a pit, concrete and
a~halt plant truing to move in. We don't think they should build a pit in a
ResidentiaUAg~icultural area. They need more open space around the pit and plant area.
Althou 295 acres seems like a lot, it is not neaz enough to buffer nei boring Residential and
Agricultural entities from the multitude of contaminants in both air and water, the smell and the
noise. More room is needed than simply a dirt road (in the case of the Hahn property and
surroundingneighbors) and a down hill slope (in our case) Rocky Mountain should be looking
in an area that could accommodate a laz@e cofnmercially zoned buffer between them and the
residential and agricultural communities.
Date: August 20, 2005
Name: Steve and Maria Herndon
9460 SoapWeed Road
Calhan, CO 80808
3 of 3
