PIPELINE CONTRACTORS
MAINLINE AND DISTRIEtUTION
11 gUSTIN ROAD REX M. HINER
LAMAR. COLORADO 81052 SHARON A. HINER
Tl4 936,9467 '
January 19, 2003
Central Sand & Gravel
PO Bos 626
Columbus Nebraska 68602
ATTN Gene Bichlmeier
Lyman-Richey Corporation
PO Bos 964
Columbus Nebraska 68601
ATTN Carl Roberta
Gentlemen:
RE: Greeley Pit
A lady by the name of Kate.Pickford, an Environmental Protection Specialist with
the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology visited the Greeley Pit on Friday,
January 17, 2003. She has a list of problems still and also could still get a
sniff of fuel from the sand in the contaminated area.
One of the problems also is with the contaminated soil pile - if we would get a
rain - the rain water might run off and get in the lake again.
The following ie what she and her supervisor, Mr.-Carl Mount have indicated it
would take to satisfy their complaints. We have to answer them by the 10th of
February so. please let us know ae soon as possible so we can answer them.
In answer to-the letter we received from the Division of Minerals and Geology
dated December 24, 2002 - the following is what we recommend for a solution to
the recent fuel spill at Greeley Pit:-
The contaminated soil pile must immediately be covered with an impervious
coves.
Gat a hydrocarbon sniffer and get the limits of polution allowable - dig a few
teat holes (recommend 4 to 6 holes) in various locations in the contalmated area
to see if there is any evidence 'of fuel. If no evidence is found, if within
the standard limits in soil testing, you are done.
If the Division of Minerals and Geology representative wants the holes deeper
into the water table, it is agreed you will do this. A grab test of the water
and a water sample will then need to be done.
All test holes are to ba drawn on a map of the contaminated area and any
ooatamiaated soil found will need to be hauled to the present contaminated soil
pile.
C~Op~
