Geotechnical Data Technical Memorandum
Aazel[ine -Road Runners Rest II Gravel Pit Lining Project
December 2000
test pits were identified as HH-TP-1 through HH-TP-8. Approximate locations are shown on
Figure 3.1.
3.3.1 Excavation Methods
Each phase of test pits was excavated by South Adams County Water and Sanitation
District using the following equipment.
• Phase One - John Deere 410C Turbo backhoe. The test pits for Phase
One were generally 12 to 14 feet long, 2.5 to 4.5 feet wide, and about 12
' feet deep.
• Phase Two -Komatsu PC 400 LC trackhoe. The test pits for Phase
' Two were generally 10 to 35 feet long, 8 to 35 feet wide, and 8 to 17 feet
deep.
' • Phase'Three -Case 5910 backhoe. The test pits were generally 11 to 43
feet long, 2 to 4 feet wide, and generally 3 to 4 feet deep.
3.3.2 Logging Procedures
' Concurrent with excavation of the test pits, GEI's Field Engineer prepared field logs for
each test pit. Soil and bedrock samples were visually classified and changes in
subsurface stratigraphy were identified. Bulk samples were collected during Phase One
' at 2- to 4-foot intervals. One bulk sample of bedrock was collected during Phase Two.
Samples were not collected during Phase Three. Bulk samples were placed in large cloth
bags. Test pit logs for each phase are provided in Appendix D.
' 3.4 Borrow Material Sampling
Five potential sources of earthen construction materials for use in slope and/or liner construction
were identified and sampled. The five sources are:
• Hazeltine Pit -West and South stockpiles
• Hazeltine Pit -Bedrock in the pit bottom
• Hazeltine Pit -Tailings pond
• Howe-Haller Pit -Overburden stockpile
• Howe-Haller Pit -Tailings pond
9g=15~gm ~m..oa 3_5 ~ GEI Consultanrs, Inc.
