Geotechnical Data Technical Memorandum
Hazeltine -Road Runners Rest II Gravel Pit Lining Project
December 2000
f The original mining permit for the Road Runners Rest II Pit (1979) states that the
pit should be reclaimed as a private recreation and wildlife habitat. The perimeter
slopes should be reconstructed to 3H:1 V or flatter from 5 feet above to 10 feet
below the water level. Other slopes should be regraded to 2H:1 V or flatter.
Flatter slopes are planned for the southeast part of the property so that reeds and
' rushes will create a desirable habitat for water fowl.
The Road Runners Rest II Pit would be mined jn 8 stages, each stage between 2
' to 4 yeazs in duration, except Stage P which is expected to require 16 to 32 years.
At the conclusion of each mining stage, a reclamation phase will begin. The
Suburban Sand and Gravel Company will attempt to complete grading, reshaping,
seeding, mulching, and fertilizing within one year of completion of each mining
stage.
' All of the affected land area will be stabilized through revegetation and grading
to control erosion and attendant air and water pollution, according to the original
mining permit. The permit amendment (1998) states that, for reclamation
purposes, the top of the perimeter slopes should be resoiled and seeded above the
nom~al pool elevation.
2.2.3 Howe-Haller Pit
In May of 1990, Mobile Premix Concrete, Inc. (LaFazge) submitted an application
for a mining permit amendment addressing the addition of 149 acres to the Howe
Pit. Upon approval of the amendment in September of 1990, the Pit became
known as the Howe-Haller Gravel Pit, which is permitted to be reclaimed as two
water storage reservoirs. The mining plan described in the amendment is to be
conducted in 11 stages that will take place over a period of about 18%z years.
Except for groundwater levels and final construction of the lining system at the
north part ofthe pit, activities at the Howe-Haller Pit will not significantly impact
design of the Hazeltine/Road Runners Rest II Reservoir. Construction of a liner
around the north and east sides of the Howe-Haller Pit that is connected to the
liner around the Hazeltine/Road Runner Rest II Pit could impact groundwater
' flow and groundwater elevations east of the pits. Therefore, proposed activities
at the Howe-Haller Pit are not discussed further in this Technical Memorandum.
98'_ISgro ImwpA
According to the mining permit amendment application, discharge from
dewatering of the Howe-Haller Pit will have minimal effects on the prevailing
hydrological balance. Discharge water would be diverted to a lake north of the
property owned by Hazeltine Investment Association. The discharge flows are
2-3
GEl Consultants, lnc.
