United States Department of Agriculture
o (ARCS
Natural Resources Conservation Service 719-783-2481-OFFICE
Silver Cliff Field Office 779-783-9528-FAX
PO Box 389 www.co.nres.usda.gov
Westcliffe, CO 81252 james.sperryBco.usda.gov
the seed is to be broadcasted, then the seedbed should be settled and fairly firm, but
left rough to catch the seed and allow some coverage by soil when either harrowed or
packed onto the soil surface. Avoid seedbed preparation when the soil is wet to reduce
further compaction of the soil surface.
METHOD OF SEEDING: Seed should be planted with a grassland drill equipped with
double disc openers, depth bands, seed box agitator, and either a roller packer or
cultipacker. If drilling is not feasible due rock fragments of the surface, steep slopes, or
other circumstances, the seed may be broadcasted. Then double the seeding rates on
the attached CO-ECS-5 form (Grass Seeding Plan), harrow and cultipack the soil
surface, or track in the seed by walking a dozer over the seeded area.
DEPTH OF SEEDING: Seed planted with a drill shall be covered with soil between'/a
inch to Yz inch depth. Seed planting by broadcast method shall be incorporated into the
surface of the soil no deeper than th inch, by drag or harrow, and cultipacking or
packing, or by tracking the seed in with the tracks of the dozer.
TIME OF SEEDING: The best times to plant would be between October 15th through
April 1St.
RATE OF SEEDING: See attached CO-ECS-S form
SELECTION OF SPECIES: See attached CO-ECS-5 form
MULCHING: Plantings should be mulched to conserve moisture, reduce runoff, water
erosion, and establish vegetation. Mulching material should be applied immediately
after seeding. Weed and seed free native grass hay is preferred or straw may be used
at an application rate of 4000 pounds per acre of air dry material. See the attached
SCS standards and specification 484-Mulching for more information or alternatives.
SOILS AND VEGETATION INFORMATION: This information is contained on the
attached worksheets, soil maps, and mapping unit descriptions.
The Natural Resource Conservation Service works in partnership with the American People
to conserve and sustain natural resources on private lantls.
