This privately owned
sand, gravel, and constmction aggregate mine is located west of the town of Westcliffe on Hermit Road.
The property described as the SW '/< SW '/< Section 16, Township 22 South, Range 73 West of the 8`h
Principle Meridian lies within an area providing valuable wildlife habitat.
It lies within the overall range for pronghom antelope, elk, and mule deer. In addition, many small game
species utilize this rangeland area. Its close proximity to National Forest lands and surrounded by large
ranches increases its value to the wildlife resource. Our CDOW representative in Custer County
observes pronghorri antelope using this area on a routine basis and during a site inspection of this
property cotmted several pronghom antelope using this property.
Our CDOW representative observed a very low frequency of weeds on the property. It is primarily
dominated mainly by rangeland grasses and surrounding areas are also relatively weed-free: This will be
something to monitor nit j!!st during the reclamation period but also during regular excavation activities.
This is addressed in the reclamation planunder 3.1.10 (6}.
If the permit conversion request is granted, the CDOW requests the following:
• CDOW has reviewed the reclamation plan and requests that the plan be followed during
reclamation of the property.
• If possible, excavation activities should be kept to a minimum during the spring months (May,
June) when pronghom antelope and mule deer are fawning.
• Weeds should be monitored during all phases of excavation and reclamation. All equipment
should be cleaned thoroughly before working in the area.
• Any weed invasion shall be immediately reported and eradicated. Leafy Spurge in particular, is a
noxious weed of concern in Custer County.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Russell George, Executive Director
W ILDLIFE COMMISSION, Philip James, Chair • Jeffrey Crawford, Vice-Chair • Brad Phelps, Secretary
Members, Bernard Black • Tom Burke • Rick Enstrom • Claire O'Neal • Robert Shoemaker • Ken Torres
6c Officio Members, Russell George and Don Ament
