July 14, 2004
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street
Room Z 15
Denver, CO 80203
© few
RECEIVED
RE: Proposed mine known as Sandco Pit, Durango, CO ~ ~UL 1 6 2004
Deaz Sir/Madam:
Division of Minerals and Geology
We aze sisters who own property adjacent to Sandco, Inc.'s property in Durango,
Colorado.
On November 1Q, 2003 we wrote a letter to the La Plata County Commissioners
expressing our concern regarding the grave impact of what Sandco, Inc. proposes to do.
A copy of our letter in attached.
In addition to affecting our property value and the ascetic value of our land, there are
major concerns we have.
We do not believe that the billion's proposed "lake" is a viable plan. The pits (not lakes,
as lakes are usually fed with fresh water) will not begin to resemble the artist's beautiful
drawings of FULL lakes. The pits will only have water fed from static pressure from
surrounding ground water and will not be supplied with fresh water. Water levels will
fluctuate between 10 to 15 feet below the surrounding ground level, not the artist's
concept of lake shores with waves lapping at the edges. Please see item #3 of our
enclosed letter for the basis of our reasoning.
Ground water movement on our property would be towards the deep pits Sandco, Inc.
will dig. This will deeply affect our flood irrigating. In addition, the stagnant water in
these pits will be a magnet for water borne insects (such as mosquitoes) and will pose
both a nuisance and health problem for the azea.
These issues do not even begin to address the effect on elk and large wildlife in the area,
noise, dust, pollution, or even the necessity of yet another gravel pit in the area. The
impacts of this permit aze significant and not warranted given the numerous other pits
located in La Plata County.
We implore you to seriously consider the ramifications of granting Sandco, Inc. their
proposed mining permit.
Sincerely,
~~ ~ ~~~.
~~
Patri ~ Dina M.
