The Spain Family
9450 Soap Wesd Ad.
Calhan, Co. Bo808
(719]47-3066
August 12, 2005
Everyone has a personal story, a journey that brings them to different
crossroads in their life. Some pursue money, fame, political office, most of
us pursue family, working jobs, having a good environment to raise our
families, clean water, air, open space, good friends, a sense of peace
when we come home at night. We hope that the home and land that we
choose to buy will gain in value and help with our retirement someday.
Most of our money goes towards raising our kids, sending them to
college. Most of us pay out of pocket for our kid's college, making too
much to qualify for federal or state aid but not enough money for the cost
to absorb without hardship and sacrifice. As you deliberate on the request
of Rocky Mountain Asphalt, you are deliberating on us and our families.
We and our neighbors bought out here with no industry in the area, all
agriculture and residential. The Sokol gravel pit was for EI Paso County
use, small and not noticeable. The size of their proposal, the industries
they plan and the time frame indicated reflects expansion of this pit for
commercial use, not just County use. This will drive our property value
down, this will drop the water table in the area and many of the spring fed
ponds supporting wildlife will dry up. The pond on our property, during this
drought time, has been visited by a flock of pelicans and numerous other
animals in search of surface water. As you know, you have permitted a
number of commercial wells in this area recently, one being piped down
Judge Orr for Falcon housing construction use. As we know from issues
with the water table in Arizona, there comes a point when this type of
expansion has a severe effect on the water table and the surface water.
This land is mostly surround by homes on 40 acre tracts. My neighbors
have homes less than 75 yards off Soap weed. Many a time I've come
home from work with children and dogs on Soap weed, bike riding or
walking. Large trucks cannot stop or adjust as quickly to a child in the
road as can a car. This is one of the reasons for industry not being in a
residential area as the risk for death increases signficantty when trucks
and children are found in the same area. The waste water, air and noise
pollution will also drop our quality of Irfe. There are many studies that show
a higher incident of lung cancer in areas of heavy industry. This site is
convenient to this company for their future use, the toll highway, why
should we have to pay for their convience? Their company will make the
profits, all we will see is a drop in our net worth, more financial hardships
and a drop in our lifestyle. This company can take their operations further
east, south, north into less populated areas where the impact will be less
and they will be the "grandfethered" business with anyone buying knowing
