A nationwide notification system has been established for
potentially hazardous materials spills during shipping. The Chemical
Manufacturers Association's Chemical transportation Emergency Center
(CHEMTREC) is located in Washington, D.C., 1-800-4R4-9300. The
information specialist on duty will ask the name and location of
the caller, the name of the shipper, the product, the shipping point
and destination, what happened, weather conditions, proximity to
populated areas, etc. He will then give the caller recommendations
for controlling the emergency situation until the shipper specialist
can relay help. "CHEMTREC" will immediately notify the shipper of
the emergency and a specialist will get in touch with the caller
promptly. In addition, DuPont maintains a 24-hr Cyanide Emergency
HOT Line at 901-357-1546. DuPont's cyanide experts are available
through this number to advise in detoxification amd monitoring
~ efforts.
