DIIRANGO CONSTUCTION
Ff~M GREG-l_EIIICKI FRX N0. : 3036299335 Feh. 14 ~2 11:48RM
1997. A technical revision to the DMG permit was applied for in Tune of 1995, which included an
~"' expansion of the, disturbed area to allow moro stockpiling. Also, expansion was contemplated on the
east side of the main channel of the river but this notion was abandoned and the revision was limited
to work within the existing permitted area. It was also during this revision process that Animas
Aggregates committed to conduct no mining below the 6645 feet elevation in the River and commit-
ted to conduct annual river cross-section studies in order to maintain river stability. Ia December of
1996, the permit was transferred to Mountain Gravel and Construction Company. Although the DMG
permit has been and still is in good standing, mining has not taken place in the River since 1998, until
permit issues with the Army Corps of Engineers are resolved. Since mid-1998, Mountain Gravel has
been owned by O1dCastle which is now operating as Oldl:',astle SW Group, Inc. dba Four Corners
Materials.. Any references to Four Corners Materials, Inc. in the enclosed application should be
taken to mean OldCastle SW Group Inc. dba Fonr Corners Materials. This is the operator of the
site as of the beginning of 2002.
Also in 2001, the landowner and Four Corners Materials expressed desire to contimre mining end also
the possibility of mining an area adjacent to the river within the south portion of the permit area was
discussed. This amendment is submitted to allow mining an area of 4.25 acres to a depth of 19.0 feet
~: and wilt be constructed in an area that currently contains three abandoned sewage treatment ponds.
This mining would be done one time onty, in the spring of 2002, and would remove approximately
122,000 cubic yards of material over an area of 4.7 acres. The small lake produced by the mining
would then be managed by the landowner after reclamation. The Thomas Pit permit land is on a
private parcel owned by Donna Thompson and Colleett Bryce, who live adjacent to the permit area. In
November of 2001, the DMG recalculated the bond required to reclaim the operation which was
$25,259. Thepost-mining land use is a wmbination of dryland grazing and commercial use in the
upper (above river) portion of the area used by the operation. It is also planned that the River be
restored to apre-mining condition of natural beauty and hydrologic stability.
Since the information required by La Plata County and the Colorado Division of Minerals and
Geology overlap in many cases, this single document has been produced for both parties.
Thomas Pit 2/02 2
