~'' III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999
Mined Land Reclamation Board
Department of Llatural Resources
1313 Sherman .t. ¥215
Denver, CO 80233-2273
Dear Gentlemen:
•
Dec. 5, 1.889
RECEIVED
o E C 81989
MINEq (.At~U
REC[AMATION D~Vr~10N
A.s a citizen of San FaYlo, CO in the county of Costilla,
I am opposed to the issuance of a mining permit to Battle ~4ountain
Gold Company. It is imperative that the Mined Land Declamation
Board schedule a public hearing in San Luis in regards to
Eattle ^^,ountain Geld A^.ine Company's revised mining plate.
Many citizens are unaF~are o° the implications that: a minim
company would have in the area. Others are very much ac+•are
that this type of industry is more of a detriment than an asset
to our community. The citizens of Costilla County haute a right
to know and voice concerns over the proposed plan.
Tiany concerns include the tearing away at a beautiful mountain
that is located only 3 miles from too•n and school. Thee quality
of life and the serene beauty that brings people into our area
will be destroyed with pollution, dust and noise, not ^.o menti.or.
the endangerment of wildlife, possiYle pollution of thce water
with cyanide, and damage to the R.ito Seco and its environment.
The loss of traditional water rights is a major concern to the
people of this community.
San Luis is a rare find, the natural and historical treasures
of the Valley have been preserved and left unchanged f~~r gener-
ations. The economic development of the area has been re-
vitalized within the last feo~ years by clean, productive
methods. Tlzis minincl plan is on the contrary a detriment to
the community despite their claims of being "good neighbors".
Please take into consideration the effects this company will
have on the community of San Luis and its neighboring towns.
You very well know the history of the hazards this type of
industry generates. Cannot one area of this state be areserved
for future generations? This decision will affect the gener-
ations to come within the entire state, not only Costilla
County. Think about it - o~ould you approve a mining company
in your back yard?
Sincerely,
~~~~~
Dana Maestas
