CO. 81005
'~1r. Bill Tezac
c oiorado Quarries,lnc.
7U S. i ~"' St.
Canon City. CO 82212
Dear Mr. Tezac:
For Wild/ife-
For People
The Colorado Division of Wildlife (CROW") has reviewed your proposed conversion from a 1 ] 0 permit
tr a 1 ] 2 permit for the 47-acre Hardship Lode quarry {the current permit contains 8 acres.). The
Hardship Lode quarry is located in S8 & 9, T225, R72W of the 6a' Prime Meridian in Custer County.
Colorado.
• Tnis mine which is located northeast of the town of Westcliffe is in a fairly and area dominated
by native grasses and shrubs.
• The area is relatively weed-free although some weeds are present.
• Big game wildlife species that utilize this azea include but are not limited to pronghorn antelope
and mule deer.
• Many small game species utilize this rangeland azea.
i?~cause this quarry is already permitted and active, roads and fencing already exist and there should not
h~ many additional impacts to wildlife if the permit is expanded. If the conversion request is granted the
CL)OV•'requests the following:
• The CDOW has reviewed the reclamation plan recently written by James Spetry of the MRCS
and recommends that the plan be followed during reclamatiott of the property.
• SM'eeds should be monitored during all phases of excavation and reclamation.
Equipment should be cleaned thoroughly before working in the area.
• In particular an eradication plan should be developed to deal with any Leafy Spttrge invasion on
the site.
If additional fences are to be constructed on the property they should be built to allow for the
natural movement ofw~idlifc.
CDOW recommends the utilization of wildlife "friendly" fences that should not exceed
42" in height with a smooth wire bottom strand at least 18" above ground level to allow
these animals to cross without injury.
DEPARTMENT OF NATU24L RESOURCES, Russell George, Exea7tlve Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION.
