Below the reservoir location, a <br />homestead was built in 1864 by a rancher <br />named Benjamin Schwander. In addition <br />to the ranch, the Denver South Park and <br />Pacific (DSPP) constructed a rail line <br />through the gap in the 1880s and built a <br />water tank, coat chute, a wve, side track, <br />and some section housing for railroad <br />workers. Several floods in the area <br />washed out the track and the rail line was <br />abandoned in 1908.
